Saints Spotlight: Maan Alawa '17

The Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group, a part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group hotel company, has more than 65 award-winning boutique hotels and restaurants in over 30 cities across the United States. As an intern in the human resources (HR) department, Maan worked directly with the HR coordinator, circulating among Kimpton's three Boston locations throughout the week and assisting in tasks such as digitizing files for their database, observing and taking notes for his supervisor during interviews and analyzing W4 tax forms. Maan appreciated the company's culture, as Kimpton has been named on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" eight times. While participating in the internship, Maan took an Emmanuel course called "Pre-Internship and Career Planning," so that he could earn credits for the internship. The course challenged him to research companies and potential employers based on his compatibility with that organization. After completing this internship experience, Maan had a better sense for his long-term career goals and how to pursue them. Since graduating in 2017, Maan has been employed at NuWatt Energy, most recently as director of sales and operations.

My internship challenged me to analyze and understand the company's operations and how different departments function. I learned how human resources really works at a hotel chain through hands-on experiences on a wide variety of different projects.

Maan Alawa is a 2017 graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston
