President Ross sent the following message to the campus community prior to the start of spring break.
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
If this week began with a blizzard, it will conclude with a sure sign of spring—spring break! Like the season itself, spring break brings renewal.
After six weeks of striving, it is valuable to consider how far we’ve come: the insights gained, skills honed, and opportunities seized. This midpoint in the semester is also a good time to assess what remains possible—perhaps far more than imagined in January—and resolve to finish strong. For many of you, the week ahead will offer a chance to learn and engage in a decidedly different and distant setting:
- Alternative Spring Break volunteers will soon depart for service sites in Phoenix and in Quintana Roo, Mexico, to assist and journey alongside people experiencing housing and food insecurity.
- Participants in our fifth annual Social Justice Trip will travel to New Orleans for an in-depth encounter with the city’s history, culture, and communities.
- Travel courses will immerse students and faculty in on-location learning experiences in Ecuador, Greece, and Italy.
- And student-athletes on our softball and men’s lacrosse teams will train and compete in Florida and New Jersey.
Whatever your plans, I hope you will take this opportunity to broaden your perspective. The writer Marcel Proust held that “having new eyes” is the essence of discovery, and that can happen just as readily overseas as over a meal with family or coffee with a friend or mentor.
As we approach the break, please remember to stay safe, stay open, and make amazing memories. We’ll be eager to hear them on your return to 400 The Fenway.
Beth Ross, Ed.D.
President
