The 1804 Society is a mission and leadership student organization on campus.
The society, named in honor of the founding year of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur by St. Julie Billiart, continues the tradition of mission at Emmanuel through a deeper understanding of the SNDs, the College history and Emmanuel's Catholic identity. In turn, the students act as ambassadors for the college at annual traditions and celebrations. The six values of the 1804 Society are Community, Education, Goodness, Leadership, Service and Tradition.
Community
As members of the Emmanuel family, one of the values of the 1804 Society is creating a welcoming community. We value relationships and want to make sure that every member of our Emmanuel community feels like they are a valued part of something bigger than themselves.
Education
St. Julie Billiart said that education is the greatest work on earth. Education is so incredibly empowering and provides people with the tools to build a better world for themselves and others. As an organization, we value our Emmanuel education and know we can use our education to transform our own communities and the lives of others.
Goodness
St Julie Billiart said 'How God is the Good God is, why can't we proclaim it to the whole world?' In the 1804 Society, we try to look for the good and go about doing good. Seeking goodness in other people makes us proud to be members of the Emmanuel College community.
Leadership
In the 1804 Society, we learn about the Sisters of Notre Dame and their humble acts of Servant leadership. We develop our own skills so we can be leading contributors to our local and global society. Meet the Leadership Team.
Service
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur serve on 5 different continents. Service is deeply embedded in the history of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. We continue the culture of service at Emmanuel through creating partnerships with local SND organizations and participating in community service.
Tradition
Through the 1804 Society, we continue the tradition of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur by living out their mission. Built upon a strong foundation established in 1804, we continue in age-old traditions on campus and beyond.
The 1804 Society has become an organization of students who embody the mission of Emmanuel and the spirit of St. Julie Billiart. The society is made up of over 40 students who represent different majors, organizations, backgrounds but they all share one thing in common...the mission!
The 1804 Society helps to provide distinguished representatives of Emmanuel College to the community and acts as peer educators on campus. The campus, including student organizations, academic departments, and college administrators, have the opportunity to utilize the 1804 Society to represent the Emmanuel community at their various events and activities. For example, some events that 1804 will be invited to work at will include:

Students must complete an application to be considered for the position. Application packets are available online and in hard copy at tables set up in the student center. In addition, students must interview with the 1804 selection committee, which is comprised of the seven members of the student leadership team, as well as staff members from offices/departments across campus, not limited to Student Activities, President's Office, Alumni Relations, Development, Admissions, and the Dean of Student's Office.
The 1804 selection committee looks for students with strong interpersonal skills, the capacity to listen to individuals' questions and concerns and the ability to help one another problem-solve. The selection committee also looks for a diverse group of individuals who have a balanced involvement across different spectrums of campus life. Some desired skills of society members include being reliable, responsible, punctual, confident, flexible, and having a willingness to help. In return, students will be offered a chance to serve in a leadership position at Emmanuel, receive recognition upon successful completion of the program, as well as receive an educational experience that is mission-centered.
