Emmanuel to Open Academic Year with Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation

Dr. Dan Ariely

Emmanuel will kick off the 2013-2014 academic year with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation on Thursday, September 12th, and Friday, September 13th, respectively. All members of the College community are invited to attend.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit, a longstanding tradition among Catholic colleges and universities that dates back to 16th-century Europe, serves as a means of invoking the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom throughout the academic year and allows the College community to come together and celebrate Emmanuel's mission and Catholic identity.

College Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry Reverend John P. Spencer, SJ will preside over the Mass, which will be celebrated in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium on Thursday, September 12th, at 12:15 p.m. Faculty will assemble in the Fenway Room; the senior class will assemble on the 2nd floor of the Jean Yawkey Center; student groups will assemble on the quad and are encouraged to wear their respective group shirt or polos.

Author and James B. Duke Professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University Dr. Dan Ariely will provide the keynote address at this year's Academic Convocation. Dr. Ariely will discuss how the principles of behavioral economics can help us understand some of our irrational tendencies, specifically the mechanisms at work behind dishonest behavior--issues raised in his book, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone--Especially Ourselves, the College's summer reading selections for incoming students. One of the most interesting lessons at work, Dr. Ariely says, is understanding our capacity to think of ourselves as honest even when we act dishonestly. The implications of this research are far reaching and include a better understanding of the most recent financial crisis and some of the challenges in healthcare. Emmanuel Professor of Political Science Lenore Martin will introduce Dr. Ariely.

Academic Convocation will be held Friday, September 13th, at 12:00 p.m. in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium.
