Faculty Highlights for February 2013

Assistant Professor of Foreign Languages José Ignacio Alvarez-Fernandez was invited to preside over the table "The Spanish Civil War across the Language Curriculum" that took place at the 128th MLA (Modern Language Association) Annual Convention in Boston from January 3-6, 2013.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Jacqueline Alfonso Barry and Spencer Deschenes '14 had their paper, "Do Drinking Games Matter? An Examination by Game Type and Gender in a Mandated Student Sample," accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Assistant Professor of English and Global Studies Monique-Adelle Callahan's poem, "Aeolian," was accepted for publication in The Healing Muse: A Journal of Literary and Visual Arts, published by SUNY's Center for Bioethics and Humanities. Callahan was also accepted to the Writer's and Artist's Residency Program at Wisdom House in Litchfield, Conn., which she attended during winter break.

Visiting Assistant Professor of History Dane Cash presented a paper entitled "'Like Carthage after Hannibal': The Korean Armistice and the New American Right" at the fall meeting of the New England Historical Association at Merrimack College on October 13th.

Visiting Assistant Professor of History Dave Corcoran presented the following lectures in Medellin, Colombia, in August 2012: "Colombian-US Relations and Reflections on the New Era" at the Universidad EAFIT and "Cultural Diplomacy and Foreign Relations" at the Centro Colombo-Americano. These lectures were sponsored by Partners of the Americas, a Washington-based organization which promotes inter-American collaboration at the community level.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Janese Free will present a paper titled "School Discipline Policies for At-Risk Youth: Research (and Practice) Based Strategies that Work (and don't work!)" at the National Alternative Education Conference in Atlanta on February 7th. Additionally, Dr. Free was invited to conduct a workshop for principals, student resource officers and teachers entitled, "Understanding and Teaching Children who are Exposed to Violence" at the same conference.

Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Laurie Johnston attended the Annual Meeting of the Society of Christian Ethics in Chicago, January 4-7, 2013, where she served as co-convener of the Junior Faculty Caucus.

Associate Professor of Biology and Department Chair Joe Kurtz co-authored the review article, "Tolerance Induction Strategies in Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation: Mixed Chimerism and Novel Developments," published in Clinical and Development Immunology, Volume 2012 by Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Melanie Leussis co-authored a paper entitled "The ANK3 Bipolar Disorder Gene Regulates Psychiatric-Related Behaviors That Are Modulated by Lithium and Stress," published in Biological Psychiatry in December 2012.

Associate Professor of History and Department Chair Javier F. Marion's review of Desafíos al Orden: Politica y sociedades rurales durante la Revolución de Independencia, edited by Raúl Fradkin and Jorge Gelman (Rosario, Argentina: Prohistoria Ediciones, 2008), will be published in the Hispanic American Historical Review, vol. 93, no.2.

Assistant Professor of Management Sharon McKechnie presented a lecture on the importance of considering organizational culture for entrepreneurs to a group of visiting students from InterCollege Business School in The Netherlands. The students visited Emmanuel as part of a week-long tour of possible graduate schools in the Boston area.

Associate Professor of History Melanie Murphy's essay on the 1989 documentary on Nazi aesthetics, "Architecture of Doom," will be published in Through a Lens Darkly: Films of Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing by Peter Lang Press in 2013.

Assistant Professor of Art and Department Chair Megumi Naitoh's work was published in the 3rd edition of Ceramics and Print by Paul Scott, (A and C Black Publishing, University Press Pennsylvania).

Associate Professor of English Mary Beth Pope's essay, "A Case against Genius," appears in the "Writers on Writing" feature of the literary magazine Passages North.

Professor of Chemistry and Department Chair Faina Ryvkin presented the following posters at the 11th Annual New England Undergraduate Symposium on Sustainability and the Environment at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Mass., in December (with Brittany Farias '13, Sunaro Ngourn '12 and Kelly Tan'13):  "Water quality assessment of the Muddy River: Monitoring Escherichia coli levels in water and soil deposits"; "Testing Lead Content in Soil Samples of Playgrounds in Fall River, Massachusetts"; and "Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis of lead content in foundation makeup."

Professor of Art Kathy Soles's exhibition, "Shoals," runs from February 2nd through March 9th at Hallspace in Dorchester, Mass.
