Coughlin '14 Pursues Passion for Health + Nutrition
As a Boston Children's Hospital volunteer for her sophomore and junior years at Emmanuel College, Laura Coughlin '14 was able to create connections that led her to her senior year internship in the Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children's Hospital.
Coughlin has had the opportunity through her internship to shadow a registered dietician and to sit in on appointments, as well as doing various other intern duties such as conducting BMI data analyses. Having had these experiences, the developmental psychology major discovered her future career goals. Coughlin's plans following her internship and graduation from Emmanuel are to obtain her Master's Degree in Nutrition and Health Promotion and Didactic Program in Dietetics at Simmons College, a program which she was accepted into just a few weeks ago.
By having interned for the Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children's Hospital, Coughlin quickly realized that her dream was to become a registered dietician for children.
Coughlin remarked, "Before this internship, I knew nutrition seemed exciting and interesting, although I had no idea if it was certainly what I wanted. I was also thinking about becoming a nurse in the fall. By early November, I realized I certainly want to be in the nutrition field! The hands-on experience as well as behind-the-scenes experience helped lead me to this decision. I feel so lucky I have been able to be exposed to many different aspects of this field already from this internship opportunity."
Coughlin had only nice things to say about her internship experience at Boston Children's Hospital and feels deeply thankful for the opportunity she was given, for it led her to realize her future career goals and potential. Having an internship that broadens one's education in their desired field becomes a labor of love; and for Coughlin, this was definitely expressed and indicatively represents the success ahead for the intern and Class of 2014 graduate.
