Message from Sister Janet Eisner, SND on the Election of Pope Francis
March 14, 2013
President Sister Janet Eisner, SND congratulates Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as he assumes his sacred responsibilities as the 266th successor to Saint Peter.
The Emmanuel College community congratulates Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, on his election yesterday as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. We pray that the Holy Spirit may bless and guide Pope Francis as he assumes his sacred responsibilities as the 266th successor to Saint Peter.
We unite with our brothers and sisters around the world in celebrating the election of the first pope from Latin America-in fact the first from the Americas. In a special way, we join members of the Society of Jesus, as well as colleagues in Jesuit education and other ministries, in joyfully marking the first elevation of a Jesuit to the papacy.
Pope Francis will serve as the leading steward of the Catholic intellectual tradition and as the global face of the values of service and social justice that are at the core of Emmanuel's educational mission. Across campus, we will reflect on and discuss the impact of Pope Francis's election in the context of the Gospel and of our complex modern era. We ask the Good God to grant our new Holy Father the strength, wisdom and vision to inspire the Church and people throughout the world.
Sister Janet Eisner, SND
