Bio

I was born and raised in Austria and earned my undergraduate degree in English and French Literature and Linguistics at the University of Vienna. I also hold an M.A. degree in International Development and Social Change from Clark University, an M.A. degree in Sociology and Women's Studies from Brandeis University, and a Ph.D. degree in Sociology from Brandeis. My teaching and research interests have focused on the relationship between disadvantaged and underserved populations and the state. At Emmanuel College, I have taught a variety of undergraduate courses, including"Theories of Society," "Advanced Qualitative Research Methods," Poverty and Social Justice," "Social Class and Inequality," "Introduction to Anthropology," "Crimes against Humanity" and "Sustainable Development." I have also worked with Ph.D. students, supervising and reviewing Ph.D. dissertations at the United Nations University UNU-Merit, Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and teaching at the Tilburg University School of Business and Society in the Netherlands.


In my research, I have compared child welfare systems in an international context and studied migrant education and poverty alleviation policy in the United States. My most recent research focuses on the role of professional discretion in decisions related to a child's best interests in several EU countries. This project, which was funded by the European Research Council and is managed by my colleague Professor Marit Skivenes at the University of Bergen, Norway, is the largest research project on decision-making in child protection to date. I am currently also completing a book manuscript entitled, Child Protection Systems and Children's Substantive Citizenship, in which I compare child protection caseworkers' views on and experiences with children's participation in child protection in Norway and the United States.

Research Focus

I am currently completing a book manuscript on children's participation in child protection in Norway and the United States based on in-depth interviews with child protection caseworkers in the two countries. I am also working on a research project on migrant education with my colleague Janese Free, Assistant Professor at Emmanuel College, based on qualitative interviews with migrant educators. Recently I started working on a large comparative/international research project in decision-making in child welfare with Professor Marit Skivenes, University of Bergen, Norway, and Professor Tarja Pösö, University of Tampere, Findland.
