Entrance Exams
There are four main graduate school entrance exams:
1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
The GRE General Test measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE is computerized and is required for many “liberal arts” graduate programs and is administered Monday-Friday at testing centers around the country.
2. Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
The LSAT is a half-day standardized test required for admission to all ABA-approved law schools, most Canadian law schools, and many non-ABA-approved law schools. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. The paper-and-pencil test is administered four times a year at hundreds of locations around the world.
3. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
The MCAT is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess problem solving, critical thinking, and writing skills in addition to the examinee's knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Scores are reported in each of the following areas: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. The test is computerized and is offered 19 times per year at testing centers around the country. Six of these centers are located within Massachusetts.
4. Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
The GMAT examination is a standardized test designed to measure basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that have been developed over a long period of time through both education and work. The test is computerized and offered Monday-Friday at testing centers around the country.
