Site Supervisor Responsibilites
A good site supervisor is key to a worthwhile internship experience. Their role is an important part of an internship. She or he sets work expectations and is also viewed as a role model. Emmanuel College looks forward to its students receiving a worthwhile professional experience during their internships and appreciates the effort put forth by the site supervisors in achieving this.
The supervisor should provide the following:
- Determine goals and objectives
- Set and explain specific duties and responsibilities
- Supervise or designate a primary supervisor
- Provide necessary training
- Supply professional level feedback to the student on an on-going basis
- Advise the faculty sponsor of any problems or changes in schedule
- Assess the student's work and progress
- Provide a final evaluation
The supervisor can also make a difference on an informal level, thus creating the optimum experience for the student. A few suggestions would be: introducing the student to employees close to his/her age, taking a few lunch or coffee breaks together, sharing any career advice you may have, and introducing the intern to people who might be valuable in his/her career determination and future job search.
The schedule of a college faculty member varies. If there is a need for the site supervisor to contact Emmanuel personnel immediately and the faculty sponsor cannot be reached, a supervisor can contact the Director of Internships at 617-735-9930.
The internship director is available to answer questions about general college policy and procedures and to assist with emergencies.
