Become a Tutor

Top Ten Reasons to Become a Peer Tutor

You are honored to be recommended by and to work for your Professor.

You welcome the challenge of helping your peers and collaborating with the Professor.

You realize it will help strengthen your skills in this subject area, often your major area.

You will be PAID for tutoring and all your training.

You will develop more as a communicator and public speaker.

You will learn how to better manage your own time and study habits.

You will enjoy coaching, mentoring, instructing and praising your tutees.

You will learn how to be a better listener and how to tailor sessions to each individual's needs.

Your resume will show employers how committed you are to personal growth and giving back to your community.

You will get a GREAT recommendation and reference.

How Do I Become a Peer Tutor

First, you will need to be recommended by your Professor as someone who not only was outstanding in the class and has successfully completed the course, but also as a student who has the interpersonal skills to work well with your peers.

Second, you will need to complete an application at the ARC and have an interview with the Associate Director.

If you meet all the above criteria and are willing to offer us at least five hours (at your discretion) per week during the ARC's open hours, then upon the completion of your paperwork at the Human Resource Department, you will be hired as a Peer Tutor.

What is Tutor Training Like?

Tutor training takes places for six hours (paid) on a Saturday at the end of September in the fall and the end of February in the spring. Those students who may have conflicts will have separate training during four activity periods as soon as possible in the semester.

A Tutor Handbook will be given to you during your first week as a Tutor and is used during this formal tutor training. A corresponding power point presentation will be used and certain Training Videos will be viewed during this session. Other Training Videos will be assigned and are to be viewed on your own time (we will pay you!)
