Christopher Flanagan '10 has been nominated by Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts for appointment to the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship Student Congress. The Student Congress exposes top college juniors, one from each U.S. state, to the skills and processes of statesmanship, such as diplomacy, dialogue, listening skills, negotiation and mediation. Senator Kennedy was impressed with Flanagan's leadership skills and strong academic achieve-ments. Flanagan interned in Senator Kennedy's Washington, D.C. office in the summer of 2008.
Flanagan, along with Ashley Pacheco '10 and Senior Assistant Director of Student Financial Services Vy Doan, also recently took part in the Association of Independent Colleges (AICUM) "Student Financial Aid Day," held at the State House. More than 125 participants, including students and financial aid professionals, personally visited nearly 60 legislative offices to thank legislators for their past support for need-based financial aid and to urge them to do more in this year's budget.
Lisa Knowles '10 has been awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Edinburgh through the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad.
Tatianna Montanez '09 and Kristy Quirion '09 were awarded the Etty Hillesum Fellowships by the Exploring Young Woman's Leadership Program (EWYL). The fellowship enables 20 college-age women to meet for discussion and take part in a mentorship workshop in prepara-tion for mentoring high school students. The focus of discussion was the play about Etty Hillesum, "The Wrestling Patient," which the students attended and then met with actors and producers.
Kevin Smith '10 participated in the undergraduate poster session of the Midwest Political Science Association in Chicago on April 4th. Smith's presentation was entitled, "The Iranian Democratic Deficit: How Oil Dominance Affects the Spread of Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa."
