Orientation Leaders Participate in Regional Conference
March 28, 2011
For the first time ever, Emmanuel College participated in the National Orientation Directors Association Region IX Conference, sending eight Orientation Leaders to the event in Providence, Rhode Island on February 25-27th.
Wes Cowles '12, Jordan Coulombe '12, Stephanie Mariano '12 , Greg Brown '12 , NyLeesa Graham '12, Greg Galizio '12, Kayla Vasconcellos '12 and Noah Doyle-Smith '12 attended educational sessions, listened to keynote speakers and took part in a number of social opportunities for Orientation Leaders from across Region IX (New England, New York and parts of Canada). While there, they had the opportunity to meet with students from other programs within the region and to share ideas on how they could better their Orientation program. Cowles noted, "the conference ...was a great opportunity for us as a staff to learn more about other programs and incorporate new ideas into our own program here at Emmanuel."
Attendees participated in educational sessions on topics ranging from "Campus Involvement" and "Incorporating Transfer Students" to "Team Building" and "Reflection" that were led by professional staff members, students and graduate students. Cowles added that with nearly 500 students from over 60 colleges in attendance, they "were able to see how much time and effort Emmanuel puts into its overall Orientation process compared to other similar size schools."
The Orientation program is designed to make the transition to Emmanuel as seamless as possible for first-year students. The comprehensive program includes an assessment of foundation skills, course selection, academic advising, educational sessions and a chance to meet classmates as well as providing information to become an active, successful and contributing member of the Emmanuel College community.
