Emmanuel Athletics Announces Two New Varsity Programs

June 17, 2009

Emmanuel College's Athletic Department has announced two new varsity programs: women's lacrosse (2010-2011) and men's golf (2009-2010). The Department has also announced the promotion of Colin Goin to Head Men's Soccer Coach for the Saints. The new programs and coaches leave Emmanuel eager for the 2009-2010 seasons.

Emmanuel's women's lacrosse team will be played at the club level during the 2009-2010 season, as they prepare for varsity competition the following year. The team will be led by Head Coach Selina Collier and will call the new turf at Roberto Clemente Field home for the spring season. Collier previously served as interim head women's lacrosse coach at Roger Williams University, where she was recognized as The Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse 2009 Coach of the Year. She is a graduate of Salve Regina University.

"I am confident that with the new Clemente Field, the outstanding location of the school, and the academic and athletic tradition at Emmanuel, I will be able to build a strong and competitive program with the Saints," said Collier. "I look forward to getting started immediately."

Emmanuel is also pleased to announce the addition of men's golf to the College's NCAA Division III Intercollegiate Athletic Programs. The Saint's men's golf program will primarily practice at Franklin Park in Boston, also known as the William J. Devine Golf Course, an 18-hole public golf facility which is the second-oldest public course in America.

The Saints program will operate under newly appointed Head Coach Julio Avila, previously Emmanuel's head men's soccer coach.

"Coach Avila, a passionate and talented golfer in his own right, is a great choice to start this program," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Pam Roecker. "Coach Avila, the former and inaugural Saints men's soccer coach, has invaluable experience with starting a varsity program and is very enthusiastic and confident about the future."

Serving as assistant coach for Emmanuel's men's soccer program for the past three seasons, Colin Goin will take over the reigns as only the second head coach in program history. Goin, originally from New York, grew up playing soccer for one of the most well-known clubs in New York, the F.C. Westchester Soccer Club. He received his bachelor's degree from Long Island University-Southampton College and stayed on after graduating to serve as an assistant coach.

Goin looks forward to his head coaching position and is excited for the team to play and practice on the new turf field currently under construction at Roberto Clemente Field.
