Professor Kathy Soles Serving Residency in Greece

March 10, 2010

Emmanuel College Professor of Art Kathy Soles is serving a residency in Greece as a part of her sabbatical through TransCultural Exchange, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting international art and the understanding of world cultures through high-quality art exhibitions, cultural exchanges and educational programs in Boston and throughout the world.

The Apothiki Art Centre in Paroikia, Greece will open its seventh season on March 22nd with an exhibition by Soles, who has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally. Her work is rooted in the landscape tradition, but has always stretched beyond literal references. Her current series, which she thinks of loosely as "soundings," explores the idea of measuring depths.

"In my paintings and drawings, depth is plumbed as passages - sound, water, air and my interior landscape," said Soles in a statement to Parosweb.com. "Using the metaphorical implications of layering material, memory of place and experience is addressed."

Soles' residency continues through early April. She will show some of her earlier work in addition to her current exhibition, "Navigations." During the 2010 season, eight artists from the U.S., Canada, Italy, Australia and Greece will each spend between two and six weeks in the Apothiki, mainly as a result of the art centre's participation in conferences organized by the Boston-based TransCultural Exchange.
