Emmanuel to Kick Off Academic Year with Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation

August 31, 2011

Emmanuel will officially open the 2011-2012 academic year with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation on September 12th and 13th, respectively. All members of the College community are invited to attend.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a longstanding tradition among Catholic colleges and universities that dates back to 16th century Europe. The Mass serves as a means of invoking the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom throughout the academic year and allows the entire College community to come together and celebrate Emmanuel's mission and Catholic identity.

College Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry Father John P. Spencer, SJ will preside over the Mass, which will be celebrated in the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium Monday, September 12th at 4:30 p.m.

Emmanuel Professor of Philosophy and Director of Values-Based Education Dr. Raymond Devettere will provide the keynote address at this year's Academic Convocation. Dr. Joyce De Leo, the College's new vice president of academic affairs, will introduce him. Dr. Devettere will address issues raised by The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, this year's reading selection for incoming first-year students.

Academic Convocation will be held Tuesday, September 13th at 12:15 p.m. in the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium.
