Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership

The Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership is dedicated to developing service opportunities and leadership skills for Emmanuel students and providing programs for young people in Boston area schools and community organizations. Established in 2004 and supported by a generous grant from the Yawkey Foundation, the Center represents one of the three main branches of community service outreach available at Emmanuel, in addition to the Carolyn A. Lynch Institute and the Campus Ministry Office. The Center also awards scholarships to students involved in the greater community.

Through the Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership, Emmanuel students volunteer in schools throughout the city as mentors and tutors. Students from Beacon Academy, Fenway High School, Knights Chinese Athletic Association and McKinley Middle School, in turn, have access to the College's facilities, including the Emmanuel College gymnasium.

Youth Program: Emmanuel College and the Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership are providing gym space for practice and home games during the OLPH Mission Saints' boys basketball inaugural season as part of our youth program.

Alongside the OLPH Mission Grammar boys basketball team are Emmanuel graduates and Mission staff members Maura Bradley,BA '96 and MAT '99 (principal), Cat DesRoche, '05 (kindergarten teacher), Allie Weller Dutson, '05 (fifth grade teacher), and Albert Hayle, '05 (eighth grade teacher and basketball coach).

The Cultural Competence Peer Educator Training Program is a comprehensive training program designed to create an understanding of issues regarding racism, culture, socio-economic status, gender bias and other issues of oppression that exist in today's society. The participants will engage in intense guided training over the course of a full academic year. Upon completion of the training, students will be able to communicate the concept of cultural competence through workshops and programs that they will facilitate at the College.

Service Learning Courses are distinctive courses that further connect a student's sense of commitment and action, encouraging them to impact positive change in the community through service-orientated curriculums. Courses available at the College include:

Kids to College allows middle school and high school students to participate in programming designed to help prepare them for their pursuit of higher education.
