PCC 2011 Goals

In September 2010, Sr. Janet signed the American Colleges and University Presidents' Climate Commitment in an effort to work toward climate neutrality. We will develop a climate action plan, outlining our long-term goals.

We have taken on the following concrete actions:

1. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.
In order to comply with this commitment, the Facilities Department purchases products that earn an ENERGY STAR rating and meet the ENERGY STAR specifications for energy efficiency. They will consult energystar.gov for complete product specifications and updated lists of qualifying products before any purchase is made. This new policy was implemented in December 2010 and appears in the Facilities policies and procedures guide.

2. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.
Emmanuel College is committed to providing access to public transportation for its faculty, staff, and students and continuously looking for new ways to encourage further use. Going forward, we hope to promote the transportation benefits offered to employees through the College as well as MASCO. With risk-free trials and demonstration of cost savings, we hope to lower the number of parking passes. For students, we plan to advertise the discounted T pass available each semester as well as encourage carpooling among commuter students.

3. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.
The College participated for the first time in the annual RecycleMania Tournament in 2011 and plans to do so again in 2012. In addition to reporting waste and recycling numbers, Emmanuel identified a number of waste minimization practices already in place and promoted these to the College community.

For more information on the competition, check out Recyclemania website.
